I just sat down to do some clean up on the body of the Vanishing Point '70 Challenger. The previous owner of this kit somehow managed to get small spots of something on everything in the kit, including all over the body. So I got all comfy and grabbed the Novus #1 and a couple of soft rags. I started with the hood and after I got the Novus on and was waiting for it to dry to buff off, it hit me. The hood is a 440 Six Pack hood! So I grabbed the plastic parts and started looking.Sure enough there is a chromed piece with 3 - 2 barrel carbs! So this build won't be a Vanishing Point clone or tribute. It will just be a '70 Challenger build. I guess that's OK, but I did buy the kit to build a tribute to the movie car. I really like the movie so when I saw the kit I thought it would be a really great tribute. Then on to other problems I have just now discovered. The air cleaner top and bottom pieces are also chromed. Looks like I'll be giving a few parts a Super Clean bath in the very near future. The 3 deuces are most definitely in need of chrome removal. Then comes the air cleaner. You real MOPAR gurus can correct me, but there never was an air cleaner on a factory stock 440 engine that had a chromed air cleaner. Was there? And for a great finale, I somehow managed to completely overlook the fact that the metal axles and the screws for the kit are missing. I think I'm more upset with myself for not realizing this than I am with the fact the stuff isn't in the kit. It's been way too long for me to contact the seller and gripe now. So I'll be posting up a thread in the "Wanted" section for the axles and screws. Dang, dang, dang. (Not really what I said, but toned down for younger readers ) Well,crap. As I am sitting here typing this out I'm also looking at the body. Another thing has popped up. On the passenger side front fender, behind the wheel, there is a Chrysler Pentastar, but on the driver's side there is no Pentastar. Again, this isn't a really big deal, but now that I know about it, it's bugging me. I guess I could always remove the one on the passenger side. In case you're not familiar with the kit, it's this one;

As far as I can recall there never was a chrome air cleaner on a factory 440, however, there was never a Pentastar on the street side of any Mopar either.

Eric is right about the Pentastar emblem. Only on the passenger side lower front fender. I'm not sure about the chrome six pack air cleaner.

So why was the Pentastar only on one side? What's the deal with that?

I never knew the reason. Every MOPAR I ever owned from the early days only had one Pentastar.

Just one pentastar. Sometimes restorers make mistakes and out one on each side.

Just one pentastar. Sometimes restorers make mistakes and out one on each side. That's right...I've seen a couple. A true MOPAR restorer knows better, tho.

The reason, as I've been told, is because you can see the Pentastar as you walk by on the sidewalk but not if you're across the street. I've heard this from a number of people, who worked for Mopar or were in a Mopar club, so it could be true. LOL

Great info. I just can't believe in all the years I was around Chrysler products I managed to never know, or even realize, this. It's really kind of embarrassing. The only cars my granddad would have were Chrysler products of some sort. And even more embarrassing is the fact that I never noticed it on my '67 Barracuda. How could I have never seen that? Yeah, OK, I'm red faced! So that just leaves the bigger error on the kit - the Six Pack engine and hood. I'm not going to attempt to correct that. I'll just build as a '70 Challenger and not a movie tribute. Has anybody got any extra axles and/or screws? I've still got to rectify that. I can always swipe the axles and screws out of one of the '71 Duster kits I have. It will be quite a while before I build both of them so I'll have time to try and find the axles and screws to replace what I swipe.

Since this is a metal kit, are the axles the same? A lot of REVELL kits don't use metal axles. The wheel backs snap onto the ends of the plastic axle assembly. Also, if the '71 Duster kit is AMT, there probably won't be any screws. The kits I have don't include any screws.

The Duster kit I have in mind is a ProShop metal body kit just like the Challenger. I haven't looked to see, but I'm figuring it has the same parts in it.

Isn't the Duster kit an AMT kit and the Challenger a Revell? I don't recall a Revell Duster kit either.
