When did it come about having the correct firing order and so on? The only thing I was worried about was my mom catching me taking some thread out of her sewing box.

Some people are freakish about that level of detail. For what most of us work on, it’s not something that I worry much about.

I mostly just try to mix 'em up from side to side. Once in a while, I might do a firing order, just to see if I can. I've never looked at a model on a contest table close enough to see if the firing order was correct.

I've looked at a lot of engine builds on this and other forums. I have never had the inclination to check if the correct firing order was used.
I'm more impressed by someone who takes the time to route the wires in an orderly fashion. I also like to see wire looms, but those aren't necessary if the wires are neat & orderly.

I've never really understood why people seem to freak out over a correct firing order, like it's some sort of freakish high level of detail.
If it's a GM or Mopar V-8, it's very likely 1,8,4,3,6,5,7,2.
This is a number sequence that I have remembered since I was 14 years old.
If you have to route them from the distributor to the plugs anyway, you just as well put them in the right place.
It constitutes no extra effort whatsoever.
Just my opinion.

I do firing order more now than I did back in the day. I quit drilling kit distributors when I slipped one day and drilled a hole in my finger! (That distributor, with five holes, is still in the parts bin!)
