Interesting ! I wonder about using squares of adhesive fake-slate flooring, like from Home Depot.
Probably takes paint & aging OK, if needed, though panel size may be a factor.
The texture may not scale well, though.

It would depend on the texture for sure and if it has an acrylic finish on it or something else... I usually stick with wood and air dry clay products... some plastic accessories....
