Is this model kit direct reissue from original MPC '74 Road Runner? Is chassis separate part or has it exhaust pipes and rear axle molded in it?

From what I have read, it is a direct re-issue. I do not have this kit to compare with the older one I have on hand, though.

Just got it and it does have the dual exhaust molded in. And it has a lot of flashing. It looks to me they took the chassis from the joker police car kit and used that. I built the original 74 as a kid and I remember it was like the chassis from the 71 72 MPC road runner kit. But at least they did give you the correct dash, tuff steering wheel and terrific decal set. It has the big block 400 or 440 with the option of the 4 barrel or six pack. You can tell that the molds are getting old it's not as sharp as the older versions. But with a little work it should turn out ok.

Got some pictures of chassis from the kits. First one yellow is the chassis from the last issue of the 71 roadrunner. The grey one is from the 74 roadrunner GTX. The black one is from the 78 dodge joker police car. And last is the white one from the just reissued 74 roadrunner. As you can see the white and black are the same. I already started cleaning up the white one. The 71 is the same as the current white and black except it's shorter at the rear. The instructions tell you to cut that section off. And of course the grey is single exhaust. In the last 71 kit you got the Superbird type nose, wing and fender vents. For some reason they deleted these except the fender vents. Hope this info helps you decide if it's for you. The only thing I hate is it only comes with these generic outside mirrors not the correct style.

Interesting, as I thought the Joker car/police cruiser would have had catalytic converters under it. However, in '75, I bought a new Dodge Coronet Brougham, with a 318, and it had a converter. A few years later, I bought a used '76 Dodge Charger Sport, with a 400 big block. It didn't have converters, and actually had a sticker in the driver's door jamb stating it was a non-catalyst model. I always assumed it was a special order car, or something.

If you haven't gotten too far just yet, the chassis and drivetrain from the AMT '71 Charger will fit the Roadrunner body and it has much better detailing.

No my build is going to be like I remember it as a kid. But a lot cleaner and neater. I just want a nice shelf build that brings back memories.

Has anyone tried the earlier B Body chassis under it, i.e. the '68-'69 Plymouths? I don't have the '71 Charger but do have a couple of the older kits.

I can't order this from ebay. Finnish post office is on strike and packages will not be delivered home for weeks. No local model shop sells this. Who knows how long the strike will last.
