Ok got the body done on the Duster. Now I have the hood. And I want to place the 340 wedge decal. I have never placed decals on flat black. Should I paint the hood gloss black place the decal then spray flat clear over it all. Or should I spray the hood flat black and place the decal over it. My concern is that the decal over flat paint will not lay down right. Any thoughts guys.

Yes, gloss is best for decals. Otherwise, any clear part of the decal will silver or turn sort of milky.

Here is one that I did a few years back. This is the kit decal applied straight over a flat black paint job. What everybody said above is correct in most cases. However, if you use decal setting solution it will increase the curing/adhesion of the decal and limit the possibility of silvering. Plus, the philosophy of applying a gloss coat then the decal followed up with a dull coat only works when the final image is also going to be dull. The 340 image on these hoods is not dull. They're not full gloss but they are a semi-gloss finish.

Very good point, Wayne. I haven't tried using solution on a decal applied to flat black. I'll certainly give it a go in the future!

You have a good point. But for sake of the decal laying down the best I can get it. I'll gloss the hood. Place it then flat clear it. This unrestored original photo shows the decal a lot less glossy. But I'm sure because of years of wear. And it's hard to get the right sheen on the black since the factory orangasol black was not totally flat. It was somewhere in between.
