Actually, I've heard that the '36-'37 Chevys where the most common Gassers out there.

Actually, I've heard that the '36-'37 Chevys where the most common Gassers out there. The more I research and read about gassers, the more I find that tends to agree with you. Not really sure why, but the '33 and '40/'41 Willys seemed to garner more attention. Even though there were a ton of non-Willys 30s and 40s gassers, they didn't end up in all the photos. We all know that Henry Js and Anglias were popular gassers, but photos of them don't number anywhere near the photos of Willys. It's kind of funny when you start digging through a lot of gasser research and material. One place I found that sort of evened out the real picture was "Drag Racing Gassers Photo Archive" by Lou Hart. There are plenty of Willys photos, but not the usual over the top, slanted numbers. There is just no way that every guy that wanted a gasser hunted and hunted for a Willys if there were Dodge, Plymouth, Chevy, & Ford bodies available locally and at area junkyards. One of the reasons I have those photos of the '36 is just because it's NOT a Willys. I've got no problems with a Willys. I just really enjoy finding non-Willys gassers. My stash includes several 30s and 40s Plymouth, Ford, & Chevy kits that I'll be building as gassers, just like the '32 Vicky I just bought. Right now I have a mental image of that kit being built with standard ride height, front & rear, with a non-supercharged Chrysler 392 in it. Just a thought at this point. |

I think the 41 willys, along with the 55 - 57 chevys and B bodied mopars are the most perfect, iconic bodies out there. I would hunt for weeks for a willys before bending to use that Chevy body. its cool and all, but the willys is just so much cooler.

I agree with the Willys and the "B" body MOPARS......but the tri-five Chebbies belong in the demo derbies!!!

I agree that all the mentioned cars are more popular than the truth. However, I would rather build what I like and enjoy doing so.
I, for one, am looking forward to Steve's builds and building many different styles and classes of Drag Cars and Street Freaks based on Drag Cars.
Some of my ideas include things like a '64 330 built like a modern take on a '60s Street Machine. A late '60s B-Body built with a straight axle and N50s on the back. A '41 Plymouth Gasser or maybe a Street Freak based on a Gasser (not to steel Steves thunder on his build, but because I want my own version). A number of '68 Darts one of them being a car I owned back in my late teens that was the most ridiculous car ever. I put a set of L60 14s on the back of that thing that required me to put air shocks and foot long shackles on it. Then I twisted the torsion bar bolts in as far as I could. The thing sat 36" higher in the front and 24" higher in the back. And I still had to beat the fender well lip up and it still rubbed the rear tires. LOL, sometimes on the inner fender well! Another choice, both of the Dick Landy Darts, One the GTS the other the Hemi.
Oh, and by the way, there were tons of Tri-5 Chebbies that were Gassers too. Not to mention some pretty cool '60s cars.
So I guess what I'm trying to say is we all have our favorites, and that's just fine.
