What's the reason for the two tone wheels?

I'll have to dig through my Super Stock book to find out who the first to do that was. It became a "thing" with lots of drivers in the early to mid 60s. Almost none of them used chrome or mag wheels on the rear of their cars. The vast majority ran steelies on the rear.
Maybe Al knows who the first was. If not I'll find it in my Super Stock book for you.

So you could see if the tires were spinning or if you were getting traction.
The same reason they put white on the sidewalls of slicks today.

Eric, do you recall who was the first to do it? I don't know why, but Grumpy is who I have in mind, but then I can't picture one of his cars painted like that.
I'm going to end up digging that book out. Dang it. It'll bug me to death if I don't.

Honestly, I don't recall. My failsafe answer is always the Ramchargers, but that's because I love those guys. lol

Well, the Ramchargers would be an excellent choice. It may very well have been them. I'll dig that book out. I gotta know now.

OK. Found it. It wasn't in Super Stock. It's in Maximum Performance. The very first photo I found with two-toned steelies was on Roger Lindamood's '63 Plymouth Color Me Gone. The second photo I ran into was of Blue Barnes' '64 Hemi Dodge Snorkasaurus.
Then on page 60, there is a photo of the Ramchargers' '64 Hemi Candymatic with two-toned steelies on the FRONT of the car. The caption beside the photo states, "The two-toned color wheels were originally used to visually check for wheel spin, but they soon became a popular fad."
There you have it. Eric was dead on with his response. And my comment about the two-toned wheels becoming a "thing" was dead on. "Thing", "fad", whatever.

No problem. Between Super Stock & Maximum Performance, there is a whole boatload of info on 60s drag racing and especially early to mid 60s MOPAR factory racing.
I'm about due to read them both again. There is so much info you just can't absorb it in one reading. You probably can't absorb it in 3 or 4 readings, but at least a few more things would be kind of familiar. Just like in this case, I recalled one of those books addressing the two-toned wheels. I just couldn't recall which one.
