I posted this on my forum, but haven't gotten any response. Maybe one of you MOPAR gurus can answer the question. Here is what I posted.
Years ago my dad owned a '76 Dodge 4x4 step side pickup. It had a 318 and "three on the tree". I recall several local, self-proclaimed, MOPAR gurus that continued to tell my dad that the 3 on the tree was a real oddity on those trucks. They told him that all the 4x4 step sides with manual trans were on the floor.
I've never doubted those guys, but I don't know for sure if it was true. Do any of you guys have any idea? Not that it makes a whole lot of difference now. I'm just curious. By the way. My dad ran up 285,000 on that truck and he traded it to a guy in my home town. That guy drove it for another 100,000 or so and traded it on either a 'Cuda or Challenger at a small, one man, used car lot. I know where it was for about a year or so after that and it has finally disappeared.
Thanks.

I don't know about the 4x4, but my Dad's '73 4x2 had a column shift 3 speed.

Yeah, it was supposedly the 4x4 step sides that came with a floor shifter. At least most of them did.
