We just had a contractor come in to give us a quote on some of the work we still need done to the house. My wife went to school with him so we figured we'd be able to get along with him. His first screw up was when we opened the door. I'm not exactly sure what it was, but his clothes were covered with a gray/white dust and his shoes were just absolutely caked with it. He never even bothered to try and stomp his feet or wipe his boots. He just barged into the living room. Strike ONE!
Next, he is apparently totally incapable of speaking without every other word being F**k or MF. And he did this in front of my wife. If it had been just me, I wouldn't really mind, but he didn't know that. For all he knew, I objected too. Strike TWO!
When we finally managed to get to measuring windows, we went into the back bedroom. That's where I have all the 1/24 and 1/25 scale kits that are either sold or still need to be sold. He saw them and asked if we had young kids. When I said we didn't, he said, "Well, who in the F**k is playing with model cars?" I told him it was me and he said something like, "Well what kind of F**k**g retard are you?" Strike THREE!!!
I looked him right in the eye and told him I was sorry, but he needed to leave. Period. He looked at me kind of funny and asked if I was F**k**g serious. I said, "Oh, you can bet your ass I am, and you need to leave NOW!"
I can't believe this buffoon actually finds enough work to pay his bills. That kind of behavior MIGHT be tolerated in a bar somewhere, but his mouth would certainly end up getting him thumped at some point. I know for a fact that, back in the day when I drank, there were fights that broke out for a whole lot less.

That thought crossed my mind, but I was also thinking that my wife had gone to school with him. I was kind of uneasy taking a stand against an old classmate of hers. After the way he talked and what he said about me, I wouldn't have cared if he was her best friend in school. Nobody gets away with that crap in MY house. Nobody.

If he is a licensed contractor, the Better Business Bureau would certainly hear about this escapade!

I seriously doubt he's a licensed contractor. Besides, he's an old friend of the wife. She wants me to just let it drop. I told her she should get on her Facebook and put a post up about it for all her friends to see. She nixed that idea real quick.
And yes, my wife has a Facebook account against my wishes. Thankfully I have Linux on her laptop.

Farcebook isn't that bad, ha, ha!!! Aww, Joe. Don't get me started. Just know that I spent 30 years in the computing industry and spent a few years specializing in computer and network security.

Mistake #1 was letting him in the door.

Mistake #1 was letting him in the door. You're 100% correct. I think my wife was more shocked at his behavior than I was. I really wasn't sure how to react to him when he came in. The only thing in my head was the fact that this was an old classmate of hers. Who would have thought the asshole would have done what he did.

On a much brighter note, we had a different contractor in late this afternoon. He and his crew specialize in replacement windows. Unlike the two other guys that we had in to look the windows over, this guy knew his stuff.
They don't remove the existing window frame. They remove just the window and the tracks. Then they have the replacements made to slide inside the old frame.
This house doesn't have any trim around windows or doors. The walls are plastered. They installed rounded, metal molding around the windows and doors, then plastered up to the metal and then left a thin coat of plaster over the metal. That makes removing the old window frames nearly impossible. If they were to attempt that, they would have to remove the metal molding, then try to install drywall patches after new windows with frames were installed. In other words, a Hell of a mess.
It's going to cost us a little extra to have this outfit do the work, but they are going to do some extra customizing on the outside of the windows, and they aren't going to charge extra for that or for UV blocking. The new windows will be double pane and double-hung. That'll make cleaning the windows a whole bunch easier.
They also offered something nobody had discussed with us. We have a BIG picture window in the living room. There are 29" wide windows on each side of the big window. Instead of replacing what is there, they are going to install three regular windows of equal size. It's actually a "triple". With those also being double-hung, we'll be able to clean them easily. There is no way to clean the inside of the picture window without completely removing the storm window outside. No way would I attempt to do that.
So just maybe that jerk acting like some animal was for the best. The first guy never even got back to us with a quote. He just left and never came back. Then I ran the second guy out of the house and ended up with somebody that really knows his stuff. Strange thing, but for the best, I guess.
