I grew up living on the "sand". If we wanted a new well, we drove 2 or 3 eight foot sections of galvanized pipe in the ground if the house had a basement. Otherwise, from ground level, we might have to drive 4 or 5 sections in the ground. Took as long as an hour or so sometimes. The first section of pipe to go in the ground was a "sand point".
