1971 Plymouth GTX - Hemi (FINISHED)

After seeing one of these 71 Plum Crazy Purple GTX’s in Hemmings Muscle Machines I decided to build mine. With my research it looks like out of the 30 Hemi GTX’s in 71 one of them was Plum Crazy Purple. So I’m switching out the 440 with a Hemi. I’ve started working on the engine to see how it fits and looks like I just need to make some engine mounts for it. I started filling in the gaps in the engine bay and will be switching out the 440 hood with the Air Grabber hood that came in the road runner.

looks great. that is an older kit correct? i have a few of the AMT road runners but no GTX kits. plenty of the Monogram/Revell ones though. that switch should be fairly east. remember, you can always swap out the upper half of the 440 and use the hemi stuff on top a 440 block. not in real life of course.

Thanks Al yes it’s the original issue and maybe the only issue of the 71 GTX. I got a recommendation to use the AMT 71 Charger chassis instead of the old MPC chassis that has everything molded in on it. I just happen to have a 71 Charger that I built some time ago and it didn’t turn out that good plus I have a replacement kit in my stash. The Charger chassis and interior almost fit perfect in the GTX. I’ve cut out the engine compartment of the Charger and need to cut down the rear side panels on the interior. By making this switch it’s adding a lot more detail to this old kit.

With a little cutting I’ve been able to put the Charger’s engine bay in the GTX and the Hemi sits in there as if it came with the kit.

I’ve been working on the interior and believe that it looks the way it should. The 71 AMT Charger is almost a perfect fit for changing parts out. On the interior I used the center console from the Cuda seeing that they were the same I used the GTX dashboard with the Charger steering wheel. Worked on the front grill. Still waiting on the weather here to paint.

does anyone make a resin 71 GTX grille. i have a few 1/25 road runner kits. would be fairly easy to convert. some interior problems but mine would be a shelf build anyways. i can live with the wrong interior.

Al I don’t know if anyone makes a resin GTX grill but you can find some PE for the GTX that have the GTX letters to switch the Road Runner grill to a GTX grill.

I was able to get the primer sprayed today and finished wiring the Hemi.
